What is the difference between metric and imperial measurements?
The metric system (used by most of the world) is based on units of 10, making conversions straightforward — 1 kilometre = 1,000 metres, 1 kilogram = 1,000 grams. The imperial system (still commonly used in the US, and partially in the UK) uses units like miles, pounds and Fahrenheit, which have less intuitive conversion factors. Australia uses metric for all official purposes.
How do I convert Celsius to Fahrenheit?
Multiply the Celsius temperature by 9/5 (or 1.8) and then add 32. So 25°C = (25 × 1.8) + 32 = 77°F. A quick mental estimate: double the Celsius temperature and add 30 (this gives a rough approximation good enough for everyday use). To go the other way, subtract 32 from the Fahrenheit temperature and multiply by 5/9.
How many kilometres are in a mile?
One mile equals approximately 1.609 kilometres. To convert miles to kilometres, multiply by 1.609. To convert kilometres to miles, multiply by 0.621. A useful shortcut: the Fibonacci sequence (1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21...) gives remarkably close mile-to-kilometre conversions — 5 miles ≈ 8 km, 8 miles ≈ 13 km, 13 miles ≈ 21 km.
