Frequently asked questions
Why is the exchange rate different from my bank's rate?
Banks and money transfer services add a margin on top of the mid-market (interbank) rate — this is how they make money on currency exchanges. The rate shown here is an indicative mid-market rate. Your bank or provider will offer a slightly less favourable rate. For the best rates on large transfers, compare specialist providers like Wise, OFX or Revolut against your bank.
When is the best time to exchange currency?
Exchange rates fluctuate constantly based on economic data, interest rate decisions, and global events. There's no reliable way to predict the perfect moment. For travel, exchanging a few weeks in advance can protect against sudden rate drops. For large transfers, some people use a rate alert service to notify them when their target rate is reached.
What is the mid-market rate?
The mid-market rate (also called the interbank rate) is the midpoint between the buying and selling price of two currencies on global markets. It's the rate you see on Google or financial data services. It's the fairest reference point for comparison — but it's rarely the rate you'll actually get from a bank or exchange service, which will add their margin on top.
Are there fees when converting currency?
Almost always. Banks typically charge a conversion margin of 2–4% built into the exchange rate, plus sometimes a flat transaction fee. Specialist transfer services like Wise charge a small transparent fee and offer rates much closer to the mid-market rate. Always check the total cost of a conversion — the advertised rate alone doesn't tell the full story.
