Frequently asked questions

How does the Australian income tax system work?

Australia uses a progressive tax system, meaning higher income is taxed at higher rates — but only the income within each bracket is taxed at that rate, not your total income. For the 2024–25 financial year, the tax-free threshold is $18,200. Income from $18,201 to $45,000 is taxed at 16% (following the Stage 3 tax cuts), $45,001 to $135,000 at 30%, $135,001 to $190,000 at 37%, and above $190,000 at 45%.

What is the Medicare Levy?

The Medicare Levy is an additional 2% tax on your taxable income that funds Australia's public health system. It applies to most Australian taxpayers earning above the low-income threshold. High earners without private hospital cover may also pay the Medicare Levy Surcharge (an extra 1–1.5%). This estimator includes the standard 2% Medicare Levy in its calculations.

What is the difference between gross income and taxable income?

Gross income is your total earnings before any deductions. Taxable income is what's left after subtracting allowable deductions — things like work-related expenses, charitable donations, and investment losses. Your tax is calculated on your taxable income, not your gross income. This estimator uses gross income as its input and does not account for individual deductions, which is why results are estimates only.

When do I need to lodge a tax return in Australia?

The Australian financial year runs from 1 July to 30 June. If you lodge your own tax return, the deadline is 31 October. If you use a registered tax agent, you may be eligible for an extended deadline. Most employees with straightforward tax affairs can lodge online via myTax through the ATO's myGov platform, often in under 30 minutes if your employer and bank have pre-filled the information.
